30 Classroom Hours
Under the Hawaii Administrative Rules and the Department of Transportation (DOT), there are Driver Education State Requirements for teens under the age of 18 years old that want a driver’s license. The following requirements are:
• 30 hours of classroom instruction with a DOT certified instructor.
• 6 hours behind the wheel (BTW) with a DOT certified instructor.
• 50 hours of practice driving with an adult age 21 and older
**Due to Covid-19 all 30 hours of classroom are done virtually
With the addition to the 30 classroom and 6 BTW driving hours with a certified DOT instructor a (parent/guardian/mentor) licensed driver over the age of 21 has to teach an additional 50 hours (40 during daylight and 10 during the night). All of these hours will be documented on a skills log provided, and will need to be notarized and returned to the instructor before receiving their BTW certificate.
